If Red Roots has been looking snazzy lately, it's because the crew has been doing fix-its: caulking leaks in the roof, installing our sign and makeshift gutter (minus a drain spout), building a new utility shelf and zine racks, setting up new computers in the space, and organizing / alphabetizing the lending library.
As one of many creative social change groups in the South Bronx, folks at Red Roots like to build relationships with the groups and organizations around us. Below are a few awesome South Bronx organizations that everyone is encouraged to check out.
Critical Resistance
Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the Prison Industrial Complex by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. We believe that basic necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure.
For A Better Bronx
For A Better Bronx (FABB) serves the South Bronx community by working for environmental justice and countering institutional racism. FABB seeks to improve the lives of all Bronx families through creation and support of community programs focused on sustainable resources, improved environmental health, economic justice and community education.
Green Worker Cooperatives
GREEN WORKER COOPERATIVES is a South Bronx-based organization dedicated to incubating worker-owned and environmentally friendly cooperatives in the South Bronx. Our approach is a response to high unemployment and decades of environmental racism. We don’t have the luxury to wait for new alternatives. That’s why we’re creating them.
The Kitchen Table
The Kitchen Table is a community kitchen and parenting collective for unschooling families committed to social change. We came up with the name The Kitchen Table as a way to keep our work focused around where we live and where we gather naturally. Our weekly community kitchen is a space where parents and neighbors, grandparents, elders and children can get involved in ways that are meaningful to them; cooking, creating, conversating, learning from one another through sharing skills and living life.

The More Gardens! Coalition is a group of community people, gardeners, and environmental and social justice activists who promote the development and preservation of community gardens as well as the cultivation of fallow land in New York City.
South Bronx Food Co-op
The South Bronx Food Cooperative (SBxFC) is a green shopping alternative to the profit-oriented commercial food markets found in the Bronx. Founded and operated by committed residents, the SBxFC is dedicated to making a difference in the community by working together to provide healthy and affordable food to all who want it.
